The recent awareness of the damage plastic disposable products does to the environment that has swept through the UK and has left everyone considering alternatives, but do we actually know what these are? People assume that biodegradable products are the best substitutes but after a bit of research it turns out that this might not be the best solution moving forward.
Many people are unaware that biodegradable products cannot be disposed of in the same way as compostable, unlike compostable products biodegradable products have to be taken to specialist sites that are designed especially for disposing of these products, whereas compostable products can just be thrown into your compost bin! The ease of compostable recycling is much greater than biodegradable as you don’t need to worry about finding a site to dispose of the products.
Compostable recycling is the better alternative, the first major benefit is that compostable packaging requires less carbon to produce, reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill and provides the earth with life-promoting nutrients. If that wasn’t enough to convince you compostable packaging is made from plant-based recycled materials which makes it easy to be disposed of and break down in manner that is kind to the environment.
A major added environmental advantage is that compostable products do not produce toxins as they deteriorate. They also take less time to degrade. Standard biodegradable products are usually broken down in three to six months dependent on conditions, compared with a few weeks with compostable.
At John Street Beverage we pride ourselves in looking after the environment and are very pleased to now be offering a Vegware range which includes PLA straws and compostable cups and lids. Call us on 01322 381380 or email orders@vaccodadev.com to find out more or to place an order.
